WASHINGTON, D.C., June 3, 2019 —The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I") today released the following statement by Charles Symington, Big “I" senior vice president of external, industry & government affairs, on the Congressional reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP):
“The Big 'I' thanks the House of Representatives for passing the disaster supplemental, which includes a four-month extension of the NFIP through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year. The Senate had previously passed the same legislation and we now urge President Trump to quickly sign it into law to avoid expiration of the NFIP in mid-June. With historic flooding in the Midwest and hurricane season upon us, a lapse in the NFIP would be devastating to more than five million policyholders and countless others who depend on the program. The Big 'I' looks forward to continuing to work with Congress and the administration to support a long-term reauthorization of a modernized program that would increase take-up rates for flood insurance both in the NFIP and in the private market."
